20 September 2024

Over the next few weeks we will be featuring individual student activities and achievements.

If you tried a new activity or challenge during the summer then we'd love to hear about it. We also want to hear about student achievements.

Examples could include sports, photography, new pets or new hobbies. We would also like to hear your book recommendations.

Please complete this Google Form if you have something to share with us.

Congratulations also to Oliver Morton 10A who has recently passed an Introduction to Umpiring  course.

Oliver volunteers on a Sunday morning and Friday evening with a hockey team, learning to coach and assisting the younger children to learn to play hockey.

Well done Oliver!

Very well done to Ruben Byrne who competed in national DH Mountain Bike events this summer with brilliant results:-

Congratulations to Jake Brown who took Grade 3 verse and prose LAMDA exams in July with results back over the summer holidays, achieving a fantastic Distinction level with marks over 90%.

And finally this week, a book recommendation by Jonah Crawford.

Jonah said, “I finished a book entitled ‘Surrounded by Idiots: The Four Types of Human Behaviour’ by Thomas Erikson which details how to communicate and understand those who have different personalities which improves teamwork in school and work. It’s a very good read and can help you understand more about yourself also”.

Thank you Jonah.

Physics Society

In July the DHSB Physics Society was pleased to see Tom Dobby returning at the end of his first year at Clare College Cambridge.

Dr Colvile said, “Tom presented a short seminar on Lagrangian Mechanics, followed by an opportunity also for prospective Maths and/or Oxbridge students to ask about what undergraduate maths is really like, as well as life in a Cambridge College in general”.

Sparx Maths and Sparx Reader

Each week we celebrate our highest performers in both Sparx Maths and Sparx Reader, two of our core homework platforms. We are proud of all of our students who complete their homework each week to such a high standard but these students deserve a special mention.

Congratulations!

Sports Update

Football

The house football competition has started this week with some lovely evenings of sport on our school site.

Well done to all who have participated.

Students should see Mr Callicott if they would like to find out more about the programme of house competitions.

Rugby

The U16 rugby team was in action in the central venue competition on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Orkney said the team beat Stoke Damerel and St Boniface College.

Well done!

Sports Leaders

Mr Callicott said, "Our sports leaders will be taking part in the Plymouth sports leadership conference today where they will develop key leadership skills across a wide range of activities".

We're looking forward to hearing more about this.

PTFA Update

Our first PTFA meeting of the year is on Wednesday 25 September at 6.30pm.  It will be in the Conference Room, which is directly behind the visitor reception. Please come along if you can - we are a small, friendly and effective PTFA who would love to meet you.

Refreshments are provided and there will be six meetings in total until next July.

You may have seen us at different school occasions, often serving refreshments, or at one of our events such as the Alton Towers trip or the biannual discos.

Naturally, over time, we lose volunteers as children leave DHSB.  If you feel you may be able to help out, even if it's just for an hour, please would you complete and submit this Google form. This would by no means be a commitment but any help is much appreciated.

Another way you can support the PTFA is by signing up to Your School Lottery - tickets cost  £1 per week. There is a guaranteed cash winner for DHSB every week and the chance to win the £25,000 jackpot.

If you sign up before 28 September you are in with a chance to win a £1000 Sainsbury's voucher too!

We also currently have a promotion running with Easyfundraising.  From 16 - 20 September September, we will receive a £1 bonus donation for every ten new supporters. This one is literally money for nothing and very easy to use.

Finally, please follow our social media for updates on forthcoming events:
