Red Nose Day Bake Sale
Devonport High School for Boys witnessed a whirlwind of sugary delights and generous spirits today as the House Captains' bake sale for Comic Relief exceeded all expectations.
The Colonnade was buzzing with excitement, despite the unpredictable weather as students and staff alike flocked to the laden tables, eager to sample the impressive array of baked goods. The House Captains, who spearheaded the event, were overwhelmed by the level of support and the sheer volume of delicious treats donated. Everyone really got into the spirit of things! In addition, Johnson House resurrected their very popular Hot Chocolate stand which generated an eager queue in anticipation!
The atmosphere was lively and cheerful, with students enjoying the opportunity to indulge in some treats while contributing to a good cause. The bake sale was a huge success with £205 raised for Comic Relief.
A huge thank you to everyone who baked, bought, and supported this fantastic event! The Devonport High community truly came together to make a difference.

DHSB Physics Society
Pictured is Nick Hennessy from Babcock speaking to DHSB Physics Society about the Southwest Regional Hub of employers who are working together to address the nuclear workforce crisis. He picked our students' brains on what forms of outreach to students and staff could assist our students in accessing employment in the civil and military nuclear industries.
The audience today gained understanding of the range of opportunities that are opening up to contribute to nuclear skills and skills for nuclear energy in this sector, including the destinationnuclear.com website.

Maths Feast
Students enjoyed participating in the Maths Feast last week. Mr Bee said “I had the privilege to take Year 10 students Arley, Daniel, Neel and Zach to the Met Office to take part in the AMSP Maths Feast competition. This involved taking part in four problem solving rounds which tested their individual mathematical ability as well as their ability to work as part of a team.”
The team did brilliantly and won two of the four rounds and finished third overall, two points from winning.
After the competition the students were able to have a look at parts of the site and were given a presentation of different roles available at the Met Office.
We look forward to being involved again next year!
Mr Bee

Industrial Cadets
The Industrial Cadets Bronze Award teams presented their final assessments this week. They promoted a potential sustainable theme park at Gunnislake and a green garden at Plymouth Airport. 12 weeks in and the students have done an amazing job!

Sparx Maths and Sparx Reader
Each week we celebrate our highest performers in both Sparx Maths and Sparx Reader, two of our core homework platforms. We are proud of all of our students who complete their homework each week to such a high standard but these students deserve a special mention.
Congratulations!

Excellent Work

This week our example of Excellent Work has been shared by Miss Nally and her Year 10 English class.
Miss Nally said "It may not look like 'excellent work' but it is the record of an excellent whole class discussion by 10b/En1 who were challenged to identify the 15 poems they have been studying from the snippets on the sheet. They were then tasked to think hard about the connections they could discover between the poems and their ideas are what you can see highlighted in pink on the sheet. All of this exploration and discussion work leads to 'perceptive' and 'confident' responses which is what achieves the very best results in English Literature. I was absolutely thrilled with their thinking!"

Student Achievements

On Sunday 9 March, Ethan Stewart (7F) represented DHSB at the 2025 British Schools Judo Championship at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield. Ethan found himself in a bracket of 19 Judokas. He won his first match and only just lost out in winning his second. He was placed into a repechage bracket which meant that he was still in contention for a bronze medal. After winning his next four matches, one being a rematch with the Judoka to whom he had lost in his second match, Ethan proudly made the podium and brought home Bronze. This was Ethan’s biggest Judo Competition to date.
Well done Ethan.

Chess News
The chess team gave it their all in the Devon finals but fell short against Exeter Mathematics School. Fortunately, through the repechage, there's still a path to the national finals for the DHSB team.
History Walk and Talk
It was a pleasure to welcome local historian Richard Fisher and members of the U3A to DHSB this week. The visitors had come to hear Richard’s talk about the history of the military hospital built in 1797 and the subsequent schools which have occupied the site. They were delighted to see what lies behind our big boundary walls and were quite awestruck. Richard was especially happy to finally venture onto the balcony. Mind, it was a bit nippy!

PTFA
The PTFA have had a busy couple of weeks. Last week we provided the bar for the fantastic evening performances of ‘Into The Woods.’ Thank you to everyone who helped. And, this week we had our PTFA meeting during which we were delighted to approve a grant of £2000 for new DofE tents and kit. In other news, details of our popular Alton Towers trip will be shared very soon - watch this space! It was definitely time to close the meeting and go home when Mischief lounged over my paperwork so I couldn’t read it!
The next PTFA meeting is in the Conference Room which is directly behind the Visitor Reception, on Wednesday 14 May. Please come and join us, we’d love to meet you.
